I'm trying to convert an .mp4, but it won't load in. I keep getting "An unknown error occurred. [CR:0x00000002]". I've tried renaming and changing the extension to .m4v, .3gp, .mp3, .mov. VLC seems to be the only program that will accept the file; however if I get that loaded in (.m4v file), my output is video only and no sound.

Based on the information I have found about the application, I come to the conclusion that it's best to use something else for your conversion procedure because this is old and unsupported. I recommend using an application that it's constantly updated to support a wide range of audio and video formats.
For example, Handbrake is a good alternative or VidCoder. They're both free and offer a lot of options to choose from when it comes to conversion.
I have practically used VidCoder to rip my DVDs to various video formats.
